Teaching a Father and Son to Get Along

John is 16 years old. He had recently moved in with his father after being estranged for many years. John's father brought him to counselling at Rapport as they were having difficulty getting along. His father also worried about John's poor school marks, drug use, and difficulty following rules; although John did not see these issues as any great concern. Nevertheless, as John wanted a stable home and he wanted to make a success of his life, he gradually became more motivated to make changes for his own sake. After a number of counselling sessions John's father became less reactive to the slightest transgression by John, was able to give his son positive feedback, and became better at managing his own stress. Although he still had some legitimate worries that John's behaviour sometimes regressed, he reported that John had made substantial improvements in all areas of concern.
